Brews Brothers, a small, local craft beer company, wanted to engage other beer enthusiasts, in hopes of fostering a community of home brewers while getting users interested in workshops or tastings.

Brews Brothers is a hypothetical brief given to teams of two. To start, my classmate Kaye and I put together competitive research on other homebrew applications, created personas, completed card sorting, and, through that research, developed possible user flows to design separately.

An issue Kaye and I identified in our research is many homebrew applications felt cluttered, had little personality, and users were unable to interact with each other. They mainly served as recipe savers or calculators without in-depth educational material or the ability to share information. The ability for users to provide content or commentary, especially more in-depth academic material, and the ability to interact with the content and other users would be essential for fostering a community. We also felt an app that provided in-depth resources and interactivity would be attractive to different skill levels and could divert users into taking advantage of Brews Brothers workshops or tastings.

We also felt an app that provided in-depth resources and interactivity would be attractive to different skill levels and could divert users into taking advantage of Brews Brothers workshops or tastings.

While defining the functions and interactions in our design, Kaye and I decided the app would focus on four central pages. These would include a home page, a recipe page, a profile, and a tutorial search page. Each serves a key function: the home page is for new content and events from Brews Brothers or users, a tutorial search page called "The Lab" for education, a recipe search and saver, and a user profile page.

We then developed some potential user flows based on our personas, one of which focused on a beginner looking for information on how to make their first brew or a special occasion. In this potential user flow Kaye and I believe a beginner would access "The Lab" in hopes of finding a beginner tutorial to give them instructions. Each of us developed our take on the design, from thumbnail sketches to a final design demonstrating our approach to the visual identity and user interface design.
